Buying Your First Yacht in Dubai: A Step-by-Step Guide
By Jyrki Jaamaa, Managing Director3 min read
Buying your first yacht in Dubai comes down to six steps: set a realistic budget, choose new or pre-owned, shortlist and view, sea-trial, agree the price and survey, then register and take handover. Done in order, with the right advice, it is a calm process. Most first-time mistakes come from skipping a step or buying on emotion. Here is how to do it properly.
1. Set a realistic budget
Start with the total cost, not just the purchase price. Add berthing, insurance, maintenance and any crew to work out what you can comfortably run each year. Our guide to the cost of owning a yacht in Dubai gives indicative figures. A good rule for a first boat is to leave headroom rather than spend to the limit.
2. Choose how you will use her
Be honest about your typical outing. Day trips with family and friends, sunset cruises, overnight stays, or longer passages all point to different boats. The right layout and size follow from real use, not aspiration. If you are unsure, chartering a similar yacht first is money well spent, and we cover that in our yacht charter guide.
3. New or pre-owned
New yachts offer a warranty, the latest design and a specification you choose. Pre-owned yachts offer a lower entry price and immediate availability. Both are sound first-boat choices; the decision is covered in our guide to new versus pre-owned yachts in Dubai. As the official Jeanneau dealer in the UAE, we also keep a selection of pre-owned yachts.
4. Shortlist, view and sea-trial
Narrow to two or three candidates and view them in person. On any serious contender, take a sea trial. You are checking how she handles, how the systems run, and how she feels at cruising speed, things a brochure cannot tell you. Bring your questions and take your time.
5. Agree the price, then survey
Once you agree a price on a pre-owned yacht, a professional survey confirms condition before money changes hands. On a new yacht, this stage is the build or handover specification. Either way, nothing should be rushed, and the deposit should be properly documented.
6. Registration and handover
Finally, the yacht is registered correctly and any existing registration is transferred, insurance is put in place, and you take handover. For larger yachts this is also the point to arrange crew and, if you want ownership to stay effortless, management.
A note on skippering
You need a valid licence to skipper a yacht yourself in UAE waters, and the correct registration for the vessel. Many owners of larger yachts employ a captain rather than skipper themselves. We can walk you through the current requirements during a purchase.
The JJ Marine view
A first yacht should be a pleasure, not a project. After forty years helping owners in Dubai, our advice is to buy for how you will really use the boat, keep some budget in reserve, and lean on people who have done this many times before. When you are ready, tell us what you are looking for and we will help you shortlist.
Frequently asked questions
How do I buy a yacht in Dubai?
The usual path is to set a budget including running costs, decide between new and pre-owned, view and sea-trial the shortlist, agree a price, complete a survey on pre-owned boats, then handle registration and handover. Working with an established dealer keeps each step straightforward.
Do I need a licence to own a yacht in Dubai?
You need the correct registration for the yacht, and you need a valid licence to skipper it yourself. Many owners of larger yachts employ a captain. We can guide you through the requirements as part of a purchase.
Should I buy new or pre-owned for my first yacht?
Both work. New gives you a warranty and the exact specification you choose. Pre-owned gives you a lower entry price and immediate availability. For a first boat, buying slightly smaller and well-maintained is often wiser than stretching to the largest option.
