The Cost of Owning a Yacht in Dubai
By Jyrki Jaamaa, Managing Director3 min read
As an indicative guide, owning a yacht in Dubai costs around 8 to 12 percent of the yacht's value each year, and more for larger or fully crewed vessels. On a yacht worth AED 5 million that is roughly AED 400,000 to AED 600,000 a year, covering berthing, insurance, maintenance, fuel and crew where needed. Below is where that money goes, and how to keep it under control.
The main running costs
Berthing. Marinas charge per meter per year. Standard Dubai Marina berths are commonly around AED 300 to AED 1,000 per meter annually, and premium marinas such as Dubai Harbour sit higher. A 15 meter (roughly 50 foot) yacht might therefore pay anywhere from a few thousand to several tens of thousands of dirhams a year depending on the marina and location.
Maintenance. Routine maintenance, antifouling, servicing and wear items typically run 2 to 7 percent of the yacht's value each year. Newer yachts under warranty cost less; older yachts need more attention.
Insurance. Hull and machinery cover, plus third-party liability, is an annual premium based on value, age and use. It is a smaller line than berthing or crew but should never be skipped.
Fuel. This depends entirely on how you use the boat. A day of cruising on a mid-size motor yacht uses considerably more fuel than a sailing yacht doing the same trip, and this is one cost you control directly.
Crew. Yachts under about 50 feet are often owner-operated for day trips. From roughly 50 to 80 feet you will usually want a captain, and larger yachts need full crew. Crew is frequently the largest single running cost once a yacht is big enough to require it.
Indicative annual budget
For a mid-size yacht in the 50 to 60 foot range, a realistic annual budget might look like this. Figures are indicative and vary with marina, usage and condition.
| Item | Indicative annual cost (AED) | | --- | --- | | Berthing | 15,000 to 60,000 | | Insurance | 20,000 to 60,000 | | Maintenance and servicing | 60,000 to 200,000 | | Fuel | Varies with use | | Captain or crew (if required) | From 150,000 |
The tax advantage
The UAE has no annual yacht ownership tax, which is a genuine advantage over many other cruising regions. Your ownership costs are the operating costs above, not a recurring tax on the asset itself.
Keeping ownership effortless (and cheaper)
Two things reduce the real cost of ownership. First, professional yacht management keeps maintenance planned rather than reactive, which is almost always cheaper over time and protects resale value. Second, a well-managed yacht can earn charter income when you are not aboard, offsetting a meaningful share of the annual bill.

The JJ Marine view
Owners are rarely surprised by the purchase price. They are surprised by the running costs, usually because no one set the budget honestly at the start.
